the last entry was 27th October 2010 regarding final exam schedule. almost 1 year ago. I'm sorry because I didn't update the blog after that since the next sem later we'd divided into our concentration. so right know we've food, environment and marine biotech. each concentration have their own challenges, and we hope all of u can do well in your's concentration until grad next year. (tinggal setahun je lagi?)

the internship also had successfully done on May until early July (10 weeks). a lot of memorable experiences at the internship company/organization. to the juniors, we advice you to see lecturers before submit your resume to the department. because they know better about company or institute for internship value. nanti awak tercampak kat mana-mana tempat yang awak semua tak tahu susah pula nanti. tak pun tanya seniors pun boleh. =)

owh, before that I want to wish Salam Ramadhan to all biotech students. hopefully our Ramadhan this year will bring great experience to our lives.

Medical Biotech Class for Today!

today we will learn about "Bubble Boy" disease. (tiba-tiba buka kelas Medical Biotech pula! hehe~)

"Bubble Boy" disease, known as X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID-X1), occurs in at least one in every 50,000 to 100,000 newborns, according to the National Institutes of Health.

It's caused by mutations in the IL2RG gene, which interferes with the normal production of immune system cells known as lymphocytes.

Boys with the condition (only boys inherit the gene ) have no T-cells and so are unable to fight off infections.

The first treatment of choice for these patients is a bone marrow or cord blood transplant, but that requires a matched donor and can involve serious complications. The nine boys in study (who had a median age of 7 months at the time they received the corrected gene) were not eligible for transplants because no good matches were available.

Researchers removed CD34+ cells, a type of stem cell found in the bone marrow, added a corrected gene, then reinserted them into the respective patients, all of whom were placed in isolation.

The patients were able to leave the isolation unit 45 to 90 days after the procedure, and none developed any severe infections, although all did get Varicella zoster virus (which causes chicken pox). The infection wasn't severe enough to require hospitalization. Some of the patients also had chronic rhinitis (runny nose) and two patients developed warts, though these subsequently went away.

The most serious side effect was the development of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in three patients, one of whom died. The other three successfully underwent chemotherapy.

Participants all had healthy T-cells up to 11 years after the initial therapy.

The study appears in the July 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

It's been a while, that's why i would like to share something with everyone..

" If only a few people dislike you, what's wrong with them?? BUT if you feel that everyone around you dislikes you, then there must be something wrong with YOU yourself. "

A very good lesson that i've learnt; making you reflect on yourself, in other words, muhasabah diri..

We usually see imperfections in the people around us, but not in ourselves. Why?? well...You figure it out!! Know yourself before knowing others and appreciate everyone around you. We're not going to live forever^^. We often forget, that's why we need to reflect on ourselves..

Taking the post vice president for our batch was NOT easy, i ended up taking it bcos of certain reasons. A leader's job is tough especially bcos it's new to me and we leaders can't stand on our own. Sorry for our imperfections..... & pls give your support & tell us how you feel..Of course we cannot satisfy everybody, but we will try our very best, Insya allah...

It was actually held today -- this morning...and guess what?

The food was great!...the nasi tomato tastes good..with lontong and kuah kacang..air sarsi...all the side dishes...
However..............the flow was bad...R&R from KoP did a good job on the food but not the management..i don't know who's fault it was....first, the caterer sent the food to KoM, which is not KoS where everyone+we were waiting>>that delayed the program already...
Then..while everyone was hungry, Dr. Ibrahim actually gave out a long speech(no offense sir...we love u!)...huhu...so we had to wait longer....then, when we get to eat, we actually had to fight and push for our food...(sisters la...bcos there were so many of us...yela...free food maa..!-no prob for the brothers though>>easy+free food!). It was more like a battle for food(this means war...!!!)......After we got our food, we just straightaway sit down n eat like there's no one else around...haha...imagine how hungry we were!! And off we went to pray n class....

Moral of the story-We have to be patient....tp kene la tengok tmpt and time jugak kan....hehe

After I-Quest...

It's been a while since we've post something. Hope everyone's doing fine.

How was I-Quest?? Heard most of the biotechnos had fun..and of course everybody was busy like crazy preparing for the i-quest+lack of sleep..but...the sad thing is...
there are rumors saying this year's i-quest is not as good as last year's..

Well...i actually agree bcos ...last year's was much more well-prepared and organised and publicized..Anyways, let the past be and let's move on..and hopefully we'll be able to do and handle things better for the next I-Quest! owh...and maybe we should change the name i-quest to something else like....IIUM Open Day....it is more commercial and who knows, maybe more people will come! Maybe lah....

Anyways...the sciencess exhibition in collaboration with MRC Talhah on animals and plants was fun..plus the bioshepherd thingy with the goats which involved most biotechnos students...There were the horse+poney...the cute rabbits and garfield cats...The animals were actually the main attraction...owh...and not forgetting the greenish iguana named iggy which belongs to fatin bear...
It was really fun playing with the animals..and riding the horse...

All in all, it was great and now you guys can go and top up your sleeps and move on with the delayed assignments, eap term papers....& etc...

And also prepare for the final...it's coming!!

If they had to go through all this, then why bother to start??
It's becoming an issue that burdens all sides...Even i'm getting tired of hearing about it..

Pity those in rural areas especially because if they're taught in English, most of them will fail, but on the other hand, those in the cities had to turn back to the mother tongue when they are used to learning in English, and also had fun learning it. So...thinking about it makes me stuck in the middle..
Yesterday i even heard my little brother saying, 'oh no...we have to learn in BM again...no...'
Yup..that was the exact same words he said..
Hehe..imagine that coming from an eleven years old..i was thinking maybe he was really having fun learning in English.

Maybe the government should really go back to basics, like teaching in English should be from a very young age when they can absorb the knowledge, not when they're used to it.

All in all, that's just my point of view..what do you think??

ELECTION for NEW COMMITTEE LINE-UP

Salam.

The Biotech Representative Committee will carry out an election on Tuesday, 21st July 2009 to recruit a new committee line-up. Students are encouraged to elect those who are capable and are willing to do the work given. Feel free to nominate your friends or even yourself.

The purposes of this election are as follows:

1) The 081 and 082 batch are separated in different classes for this new semester, and 081 are now combined with 072 batch again. New committees from the 072 batch is needed.

2) To produce good quality leaders among the Biotechnology students.

3) To give everyone an opportunity to do something for our class.

Everybody are allowed to freely choose and nominate the candidates that they think are suitable for the available posts. The posts will be distributed on paper during the election day.

The current committee line-up hope that all the students will be ready and choose wisely.

It's been quite a while since the last post.
I've got a great news here to share with all of you. Our former Molecular Cell Biology(MCB) lecturer, Miss Mardiana aka miss nana had just gotten engaged last saturday, 27th June 2009. Let's all wish her a very happy ending and all the best for her furure undertakings.

To Miss Nana, CONGRATULATIONS! Don't forget to invite us for your wedding=B

P.S - Swine flu(aka AH1N1 influenza) alert!! The swine flu breakout was really bad. Some schools were closed here in KL. Do you guys know that the government had to call it 'SELSEMA BABI' cos most malaysians thought it was nothing serious when they heard the name AH1N1. After changing the name, more & more cases had been reported. Hope all of you are doing well and please stay healthy cos i WANT to see you guys this coming semester(^^v). And don't forget to wear masks when going out.

How are the biotechnos doing?
Sorry for not updating this blog for soooo long.We've been busy..right??
Actually there were some problems with the internet connections, so i was unable to update this lovely blog of ours.

I've got a few reminders from our President :
1) Make sure you guys did enough revision.
2) Make sure you guys know the date, time & venue for the exam correctly.
3) Make sure you guys bring along your exam slips & matric cards for the exams.
Urm...what else....sorry Mr. President..I forgot..hehe

Common biotechnos!! Let's show everyone that we are not just the coOl, funky and happening crowd, but we're also 'd' intellectuals and strive hard for our finals!

Huh..what a relief to say that out..I've been wanting to say that for weeks now~haha

Twisted tongue!!

Salam.

Hello=)
I've got something fun for everyone out there^^
Now i'm very sure all of you heard about tongue twisters before.So...why don't you guys try them.It really helps with your english especially the pronunciations.Trust me cos i've been doing them since primary school and what's more amusing is that they're still very fun especially if you do it with your family and friends.Here are some that i managed to get:

1) She sees cheese.
2) I slit a sheet. A sheet I slit. Upon the slitted sheet, I sit!
3) Nine nice night nurses nursing nicely.
4) She sells sea shells on the sea shore, the shells she sells are sea shells I'm sure. 5) Betty Butter bought some butter but the butter that Betty Butter bought was bitter, so Betty Butter bought some butter better than the bitter that Betty Butter bought.

The 5th one is actually the version that i've heard. Oh and make sure you pronounce them the correct way(eg: 'that' doesn't become 'dat') or else, you're not making any progress then. You can look for more tongue twisters on the internet.
Try them!!

Salam.Alhamdulillah diberi kesempatan untuk mencoret sesuatu di sini.Memandangkan blog ini adalah di bawah seliaan biro info & media,saya perlu mendapatkan keizinan daripada mereka terlebih dahulu.Terima kasih kepada Syamil,Saleha dan Miss Hasna.Saya memilih untuk menulis di dalam Bahasa Melayu agar lebih mudah untuk difahami oleh majoriti.Insyaallah.

Setelah melalui beberapa siri peperiksaan pertengahan semester(mid-term),saya berharap anda semua masih lagi mempunyai kekuatan untuk meneruskan sesi pembelajaran.Walaupun segala usaha telah dicurahkan,perlu diingat segalanya bukan terletak di tangan kita.Sebagai manusia,kita hanya berupaya untuk berusaha dan terus berusaha tanpa mengenal erti penat lelah.Apabila telah berusaha dengan segala daya yang ada,serahlah kepada Allah 'azzawajalla.Hanya Dia yang Maha Mengetahui apa yang terbaik buat hamba-hambaNya.Apa jua keputusan,kita dituntut menerimanya dengan hati yang terbuka.Mungkin pada kali ini,bukan rezeki kita.Namun,jangan lupa.Masih ada lagi ujian pertengahan yang perlu ditempuh.Bersiap-sedialah dengan secukupnya.

Antara perkara yang menarik perhatian saya ialah 'group discussion'(perbincangan dalam kumpulan) yang baru sahaja diwujudkan atas tujuan untuk saling bantu-membantu antara satu sama lain di dalam pelajaran.Sebenarnya,konsep pembelajaran yang baik ialah apabila kita berupaya memberi kepada orang lain dan dengan itu kita akan lebih memahami.Faham kita pula akan bertambah.Ia tidak sama dengan wang,apabila diberi ia akan berkurang.Saya menyarankan supaya 'group discussion' ini diteruskan mengikut keperluan.Namun,sebagai mentor,saya secara peribadi tidak banyak memberi,sebaliknya orang lain yang banyak membantu saya untuk memahami terutama biostatistics dan biochemistry.Cara kebetulan,hari ahad malam kelmarin(15 feb),diadakan biotech night.Tiada seorang pun daripada ahli kita yang menghadirinya.Nak buat macam mana?.Semua orang tengah khusyuk 'study group'sampai terlupa.Minta maaf banyak-banyak kepada penganjur.Lain kali,buat awal-awal mesti ramai yang datang.

Saya berkesempatan untuk mengedarkan artikel di dalam kelas(pengikut dan ikutan:antara tuah dan padah)tetapi dalam jumlah yang sedikit.Insyaallah,akan menyusul artikel daripada biro education.Agak menarik tajuknya.Lebih saya sukai jika suasana ilmiah dapat diwujudkan dengan bahan bacaan yang membuka minda dan pemikiran agar kita lebih terbuka di dalam berfikir.Kalau ada kawan-kawan yang ingin menyumbangkan artikel untuk perkongsian,boleh ajukan kepada nasar atau nadia untuk tindakan selanjutnya.

Sebelum terlupa.Hari Sabtu,21 feb akan diadakan fiqh sifat solat nabi anjuran msc.Sesiapa yang tiada sebarang aktiviti hujung minggu ini,bolehlah menghadirinya.Satu lagi,sesiapa yang memberi komen di blog saya,kalau boleh sertakan nama atau email untuk perbincangan.Berkenaan Sciencess Family Day,sehingga kini masih belum ada sebarang maklumat lagi.Sekadar ini sahaja.Sebelum berundur,terima kasih kepada pengunjung tetap blog ini.Diharap dapat berkongsi sebarang maklumat pada masa akan datang.Insyaallah,jika berkesempatan,kita bersua lagi.Semoga usaha kita akan diberkati.Amin.Wassalam.

Hopefully we'll be able to organize other better events that are more fun in the coming future & all biotechnos can make time to come.

Connection Problem

There has been 3 straight non-stop rainy day starting from the 1st Jan up until now(3rd Jan) and i dont think it will stop falling tomorrow..And for some reason, there has been a disturbance in our internet connection..the signal is very low...
As a result, i cant update anythng on this blog..So, Pls dun blame me if there's nothing new on this blog or if u think this blog is empty or wut..For God sake, i've tried everythng i could to make this blog useful for all of us...
